Aircraft-transportable expeditionary logistics platform combines 10,000-pound pallet self-loading capability with operator training and ongoing technical support.
LAS VEGAS, Oct. 13, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- S.A.F.E. Structure Designs LLC(SAFE) has been awarded a contract valued at more than $10 million to supply SAFE MULE expeditionary logistics platforms to the United States Marine Corps. The initial, low-quantity order includes operator training and ongoing technical support. SAFE is already in discussions regarding an additional quantity purchase anticipated in 2027, subject to finalized requirements, funding, and procurement decisions. A defining feature of the SAFE MULE is its combination of lifting capability and transportability. The system is designed to self-load a loaded 463L military cargo pallet weighing up to 10,000 pounds from the ground onto its onboard cargo platform, while remaining light enough for internal transport aboard a V 22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft. Its low system weight also supports carriage in the C-17's aft cargo-ramp position.
That combination addresses a practical expeditionary logistics challenge: delivering cargo-handling capability to locations where conventional forklifts and loaders may be difficult to transport or operate. By combining ground pickup and cargo transport in one compact, tracked platform, the SAFE MULE helps personnel move palletized supplies and mission equipment in austere environments.
"The engineering challenge was to deliver substantial lifting capability without creating a machine too heavy to travel with the force it supports," said Johnny Buscema, President and CEO of SAFE Structure Designs. "The SAFE MULE can pick up a 10,000-pound loaded 463L pallet and carry it on its own platform, yet remain light enough to travel inside a V-22. Achieving that balance between strength, weight, and mission utility has been central to its development."
The supplied configuration uses non-radio-frequency controls, allowing operation without an RF control link. This feature is particularly relevant to ammunition and specialized ordnance-handling environments where controlling RF emissions is an operational consideration. Handling individual loads remains subject to applicable military safety procedures and authorization.
The SAFE MULE's adjustable cargo platform and integrated rollers support transfers between the platform and compatible aircraft or transport vehicles. Its tracked mobility and compact configuration are intended to support cargo movement on unimproved terrain while reducing reliance on separate loading and transport equipment.
Under the contract, SAFE will train operators on the supplied systems and provide ongoing technical support as the equipment enters service. The award builds on the company's previously announced transition of the SAFE MULE from research and development into production.
"Our commitment goes beyond supplying a tractor," Buscema added. "We are providing a mission-specific capability and standing behind the Marines who will use it. Training, technical support, and listening to the operators are all part of that responsibility. We are grateful for this opportunity to serve, and we give God the glory for the ability to do this work."
