Preventable workplace injuries remain a major concern for workers and employers across the United States and Puerto Rico. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), 5,070 fatal work injuries were recorded nationwide in 2024. During that same year, private employers reported more than 2.5 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses.

To promote safer workplaces and encourage proactive safety practices, the National Safety Council established National Safety Month in 1996. Observed each June, the initiative raises awareness about common workplace hazards and practical ways to prevent injuries and illnesses.

For 2026, National Safety Month focuses on the following weekly themes:

  • Week 1: Moving Safety Forward
  • Week 2: Staying Safe on the Road
  • Week 3: Promoting Holistic Worker Health
  • Week 4: Preventing Slips, Trips, and Falls

“Health and safety programs are essential for protecting workers across many industries,” said Harry Peña, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “In Puerto Rico, there were 22 fatal occupational injuries reported in 2024, slightly down from the previous year, but still higher than the 18 recorded in 2022 and the 19 in 2021. In addition, thousands of workers experienced job-related injuries and illnesses. Preventing these incidents, and the hardship they can cause for workers, families, and employers, is the ultimate goal.”

Effective occupational health and safety programs not only protect employees and communities but also strengthen organizations by reducing risk, improving productivity, and helping businesses remain compliant with regulations.
